With JP on a holiday, I feel kinda lonely posting my dumb moves Embarassed

I tried to install SLAX into a lonely partition using the installer. It would hang on the boot and freeze. I had to use SMart Boot floppy to get a SuperGRUB disk to boot and could not quite figure how to make that work right. Idea I used the SuperGRUB to just uninstall GRUB and booted the SuSE install disk to run "repair" which it did ...........sorta!

PC boots OK, but I reach a command line to log into SuSE. Running "startx" does not work - recommends I go to the Xorg folks online. xorgconfig has not helped- settings for monitor, mouse, etc.

I can get the YaST to work from the command line. Yast is in a text format, but I can get around in it. Things LOOK OK (window managers all set at defaults), so I am not certain where to go from here. Maybe some "runlevel" isn't right, but I don't want to make things worse by experimenting too much.

Would the SLAX have done something besides messing up the GRUB??

Any help appreciated

it sounds like a runlevel issue to me too. when i installed slax on the lappy, it hosed my grub as well. after i fixed it, i don't have that nifty little splash screen. check your menu.lst file.

You can navigate using the arrow keys and the enter key on your keyboard Smile

don't laugh, mushroom, some day you too will be old Razz

I don't fully understand the GRUB's scope. By what Coastie reports, the menu.lst could be edited to start KDE??

Can I access the menu.lst through YaST?? When I get into menu.lst, what part of the script would wake up the KDE??

I have to be gone for a couple days before I can experiment.

Thanks for the tips.

Hey, I am recovered!! Not a GRUB problem after all. I tried to use xorgconfig with no results. Finally booted up, went into the text mode of YaST. It's more complicated than mushroom would have me believe-- I had to use the TAB key as well as arrows and enter!!

Anyway, in System -> /etc/sysconfig Editor -> System -> SuSE Config -> the default setting of "yes" for the " CWD_IN_USER_PATH" had changed to "no". A return to the default "yes" was all it took.

Don't know how a SLAX install could have changed that, but after restoring the GRUB, all it took was as simple return to a default setting to get me back in business. Very Happy
