| Just reading the story it doesn't sound bad. I just hope iXsystems doesn't do anything stupid.

| If they stop making PC-BSD free downloads from being available, that would be stupid. Anything else they do other than stunt it's growth will be a non issue for me. All I want to do is occasionally assess if a BSD distro can, or ever will be, a possibility for a commodity desktop. I think it COULD, in theory, but in practice, it is quite questionable. I do like what I've seen from about 0.5 until the recent 1.2 release, though. If they don't mess with what's been done so far and they pay the developers for their work, it could help advance this technology. |

PC BSD is the only BSD that has gotten air time on my system overnight and for more than an evening at a time. It is solid, stable, and feels a lot like a typical Linux distro, yet has some BSD aspects that in some ways make it potentially superior to Linux distros - security concerns, for one. Linux is good, BSD is better.
PC BSD is inferior to Linux at the present time in hardware support, but making good strides. On mainstream commodity equipment, such as popular Dell, HP, or IBM equipment, PC BSD runs cleanly and very effectively. |

I have run PC-BSD versions prior to the current release with decent, but not outstanding results. I found pretty much the same thing with the recently released 1.2 release.
The installation is effortless, but stuff like fonts are configured to the KDE defaults, not very good for someone who is beginning to get cataracts and has less than stellar vision. Default browser font size in Konqueror is 7, which is pretty normal, but only viewable for those who are young and have great vision. Otherwise, kick the default sized font to at least ten or larger, and make the median font at laest of size 12. Then it works.
Stuff like Flash players are also easy to install, but they do not come standard.
This is a very good system, but it will take work on your part to set it up to your liking. Most BSD people would prefer to do just that, however, the average inquisitive person does not want to have to play with fonts just to get the system in a usable state. Still, with slight work, this distro is looking good! |

It did not take much to get PC-BSD working. This is certainly as easy to initially install as any recently popular Linux distribution, and it has very similar software in it as the typical base OS with KDE in it.
You get KDE 3.5.3, not the absolute newest, but very good for a stable desktop OS. |
