I've seen some of these issues in other forums but no responses as to what they are. I rdon't think its a router issue but it may. iwlislt rate displays:
Code: |
ra0 unknown bitrate information
current bit rate=11mb / sec
|
?? So it's not screaming but it shoudn't time out either. When I establish a connection, It goes straight to google, and I can ping it. But the next site I try to go to, it hangs and I can't even go to or ping google for that matter. I'm running gnome3.1 right now and before I can download the latest firefox I have to use gnomes epiphany browser. Is there some configuration issue at work here? I mean 11 - 12 mb /s shouldn't be that slow. Even I know that. Any words of wisdom would be vastly apreciated.
Oh and how come embedded html is enclosed in square brackets instead of angle ones?

A poor signal or interfearance can realy slow things down.
In a term go into su and post the results of "iwconfig"

Yes, but the symptoms may be elsewhere. The signal isn't great but the pci card is literally 10 feet from the router with one wall between them. Here's iwconfig:
Quote: |
root@eggsmachine:/home/eggmatters# iwconfig ra0
ra0 RT61 Wireless ESSID:"actiontec"
Mode:Managed Channel:6 Access Point: 00:20:E0:02:4E:AD
Bit Rate=12 Mb/s
RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Link Quality=58/100 Signal level:-77 dBm Noise level:-103 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
root@eggsmachine:/home/eggmatters

Does /etc/resolv.conf have anything to do with it? And what is the search parameter in that file?

Congratulations to me! I am now posting from my newly configured wireless machine!! For some reason, this site screams. After manipualiting some antennae, this was the best I could get:
Code: |
root@eggsmachine:/# iwconfig ra0
ra0 RT61 Wireless ESSID:"actiontec"
Mode:Managed Channel:6 Access Point: 00:20:E0:02:4E:AD
Bit Rate=36 Mb/s
RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Link Quality=72/100 Signal level:-67 dBm Noise level:-103 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed bea

But what a relief! some sites seem impossiblle or too slow to load. I was however able to download firefox in about 5 mins. Should be faster but at least it worked. So, I'll install that and see if that helps.

"Signal level:-77 dBm" is just to weak to be reliable.
"Signal level:-67 dBm" is much better.
You may wish to look into getting a better anttana or better location to get your Signal level onto the range -60 dBm to -25 dBm.

I almost wonder if you accidentally logged into the wrong router. (Actiontec is not a popular brand here in MA, but maybe in Canada it's more common and your neighbors have one or two.)
Go to a terminal and type:
While you're at it, verify that the router you intend to use is in fact an Actiontec router. If it's not, you may have accidentally logged into your neighbors connection. The router you intend to connect to, being as close as you say it is, you ought to have a consistently nice, strong signal. It's default ESSID should also have something in common with it's brand name.

Oh it is, i set the ssid myself. iwlist scanning just shows the available connections. Apparently there's a sticky on here under software titled "how to make mozilla go faster" and that was the trick. Now it screams, Im set and happy.

Definitely getting your signals to a level stronger than -60 dBm will help.
If you need ideas on antennas, the ab9il.net site has some decent projects - http://www.ab9il.net/wlan-projects/wifi1.html. My neighbor actually hits his own AP from a non-wireless coffee shop 3 blocks away using the long helical antenna mounted on his router.
Having a full 200 mW router helps too...
