Hi, welcome to USAlug!
Have you used Linux very long?
Have you searched through www.sourceforge.net and/or www.freshmeat.net and/or http://savannah.gnu.org/? Those sites may offer programs that make this task easy, and if they offer something, you could search for that program by name in your favorite RPM repository.
And if my ancient memory serves me correctly, a normal serial cable is not the right choice, you'd need a 'null modem' type serial cable to connect between systems.

One thing I'd like to offer: using the parallel ports should be a few times faster, especially if both PCs support all the latest specifications (I've used Windows 98's 'Direct Cable Connection' and back then, the parallel cable method was much much faster - like 10 times faster). Not sure if the needed parallel cable is not a '1 to 1' straight through cable. Or, if the PCs both have network cards, try a crossover cable instead of a patch cable. And isn't there a USB type transfer mechanism as well?
Anyways, serial to serial is possibly the easiest method, at the expense of having no error detection.

Yes, there is a USB transfer ability also. I've done it before (but only on windows), but the cables (type-A at both ends) are VERY hard to find (at least last time I looked).

Is there any reason why you cannot use a small hub or switch and a couple of network cables?
