I've never heard of this, so I researched the situation a little.
Yes, the files are compressed, according to Filext. As you said, you need to decompress them at some point before most MP3 players could read them. Nero compressed them, so naturally the Nero suite should be able to decompress them (Nero is available for Linux, I saw no mention of backup or compression support).
For the fun of it, try opening a representative file with a bunch of file compression tools, both Linux tools (install as many as you can) and Windows tools (I suggest 7-zip). I once had a 'proprietary' file format problem that ultimately was just compressed in a very simple manner. Might also look into ROT-13 or ROT-47, although I doubt that is what was used.
