Today we’re proud to announce the general release of video calls in Skype 2.0 for Linux. As you may already know, the best things in life are often free and now you can make (and receive) free, great quality video calls on Linux.

I thought long and hard about what I could say about this release. But you know the adage, “Seeing Skype 2.0 for Linux is worth a thousand words.” So I’m keeping this short and to the point. Download it now to see (and hear) for yourself. Skype 2.0 for Linux builds upon the ground foundation of our previous release and adds the feature you’ve all been asking for - video.

I just downloaded the new version. Let's just hope that the Phillips Phone will start working with it soon.

How will this affect the account I have now ? I wonder if the new one will detect the account balance automatically ?

OK, I don't use Skype, I use PennyTalk, so do you use a phone in conjunction with your web cam?

In reading the comments, it seems that a lot of Linux users are having problems with Skype. A lot of the whistles, bells, and buzzers are missing, I guess it's a stripped down model.

OTOH, Here are a couple of interesting comments:
Aleksandar wrote:
Skype is a proprietary software and as such it is bad for the users that install it on their computers. GNU/Linux users should NOT be happy for this release since this is another version that can harm your computer and privacy ... actually you can't predict what would happen, because you don't know what would be executed on your computer, thus, Skype is a "can't trust" piece of software! (edited for spelling)

All the standard runtime libraries that already resident in memory on 64-bit machine cannot be used with a 32-bit version of Skype. Instead 32-bit versions of all those common runtime libraries must be installed on that 64-bit machine and loaded into memory just to support that *one* rogue 32-bit app.

Skype, a closed source application, is difficult for the open-source community to accept for many reasons and this is one of them: Only a 32-bit binary is offered for download and there is no source code available for the community to port to and rebuild on amd64, or any other architecture.

Skype's philosophy sounds like M$'s philosophy Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Razz It will be nice when someone comes up with an Open Source clone for these VOIP phones.

Well I am using a "Logitech Quickcam" and a Logitech USB Headphone/Microphone. This Hardware is around 5-6 years old, I used it before with ICQ and MSN for Video Talk.

For me, Skype Linux is a little like ICQ, Chat, Video Talk, or Phone Calls. Skype has futures what Pidgin(Gaim) or anothers don't have. If you using MSN then only "aMSN" is close to it.
I am using it only from Computer to Computer. Computer to Phone, sometime you have a good line and sometime you have a bad line.
