We used it in high school. IIRC, each PC was dependent on the server for authentication stuff, but each desktop used its own processor and RAM. I'm not entirely sure if they had hard drives or not, come to think of it. I think I remember a DOS prompt, though... Hmmm...
The authentication stuff was *definitely* Novell, though.

Netware authenticates to the network then the Netware windows client authenticates to the local machine.
Every Novell Netware install requires a DOS partition of 200MB or bigger. Netware uses DOS's autoexec.bat file to start the server with the server command. If you see a Netware server sitting at the DOS prompt the server isn't actually running. It should look like this hostname: if the server is up.
