suse 10.2 cannot be accessed from other machine after reboot

I rebooted suse10.2. I can still browse the web on this machine, but am unable to
ping the machine or ssh into it. I do not see any issue with the firewall settings, although
when I tried to stop the firewall in Yast2-> Security and Users Firewall, it will not let me stop the firewall, how can I diagnose the problem?

Did it give an error, or was the firewall already disabled / turned off?

The IP of the machine hasn't just changed has it?

is sshd running?
and is the /etc/hosts.deny file empty?
