I need to learn some more languages, im pretty good in Matlab.

But job wise, i might need to learn C++/Java/MySQL to compete better for whats out there. (.NET as well possibly Sad ).

Any recommended books or resources?... i cant see a decent Java book anywhere... most seem to be full of unecessary crap

MySQL .. how to go about learning that?

thanks

I give you this link, MySQL Books Review

http://www.ocelot.ca/mysql.htm

about C/C++ this are the best. Don't take C# or .NET then better go Python. That's my personal view Wink

Java could be handy too.

I happen to know that LLBean is changing it's entire back end systems over from a hodgepodge of C, C++, fortran and other to a pure Java based backend.

I've got a couple of bookmarks that might be handy - first is for free books online.

And then there's a programmer's site (mostly for web development, but might be useful information there.

thanks for the links, quite a lot of info to absorb. Python does seem logical to learn. Im just wondering how many companies would be open to using it though? I imagine (and i might be wrong) the majority companies are using and Java Sad. Python looks a more readily-readable language though. Yes i think i will skip .NET completely. I have enough to think about. I definitely need Java/Python or C++ though i reckon.

ive seen these two books on amazon

MySQL Cookbook (Paperback)
by Paul DuBois (Author)
Publisher: O'Reilly Media, Inc.; 2 edition (27 Nov 2024)

Java Pocket Guide (Pocket Guides) (Paperback)
by Robert Liguori (Author), Patricia Liguori (Author)
Publisher: O'Reilly Media, Inc. (5 Mar 2024)

Im thinking a pocket reference book might be better for java and not a teaching book because of all the custom libraries and potentially unecessary information.

The cookbook for MySQL seems to be rated.

Im considering purcahsing these two unless anyone has an extremely negative view of either.
