The thread here seems to suggest that the 27th branch of the 2.6 Linux kernel has some networking issues, but there do seem to be work arounds. The tail end of the thread as of lunch time today (Monday, 10/20/2008) show some solutions.

This comment seems to be one of them:

Quote:
The standard place for this kind of setting is in /etc/sysctl.conf. Add the following line to that file:

net.ipv4.tcp_timestamps=0

This is preferred over /etc/init.d/rc.local (actually, you may want to change /etc/rc.local instead of that file, too).

This has shown up as what could be a showstopper for Ubuntu, but people using other 2.6.27 kernels are sometimes running into this as well.

I have checked thios out, with Archlinux 2.6.27.1 and openSUSE 2.6.27.2 I have no problem. Maybe it is fixed and hangs with Ubuntu. I don't know what kernel status Ububtu have.

I have not seen any issue whatsoever with sidux since they went to the 27th kernel update either.

sidux has been regularly updating the 2.6.27 kernel; had 2.6.27-1, now up to 2.6.27-2, and they are around their tenth build of the 27th update. No problems yet that I can see here, even with an update tonight.

I think that might have been a problem for a small group of sidux users - strangely manifested itself as an inability to connect to sidux.com, while being able to connect to most other websites. One of the strangest failures I've heard of.
Couldn't connect with osx either. Unfortunately a lot of the troubleshooting was in German, but not all.

[edit to add this from the original thread:]
Quote:
TCP timestamps are a desired feature. The fact that they were broken in the upstream kernel for a long time was the bug. It's just that now they've been fixed, this is exposing the fact that some routers do not handle timestamps correctly.

regards,
rumbarg

Guess that I was fortunate not to see this, but slh has been on top of it and has probably long fixed it - he must have because I am running sidux right now, and it works, same as usual, with my shiny new sidux 2.26.27-2 sidux slh kernel.

slh from sidux is one of the better kernel maintainers that I know of. Warren Woodford does a pretty good job, too, so I use kernels from two of the distro specific systems that I like best.
