hbattle I am not an Ubuntu person but there are many here that can possibly help you, First I want to welcome you to USALUG, the greatest LUG on the planet Wink.

I think that one of the first things that you will be asked is how you updated/upgraded. whether you did it at the CLI or whether you used a script, etc. That might help a lot in determining the cure Wink

Once again, Welcome to USALUG Exclamation

Thanks JP

The update was automatic.

The fax driver no longer works and the entire interface has been replaced. There is no information to tell what it has been replaced with.

Automatic?? I guess I'm wwwaaaayyyyy behind on what the *buntus are doing these days. Laughing Laughing

I would think there would be a log somewhere's that could give you more info on the update. Does your new GUI still have KDE, or has that been lost as well? If you still have KDE, I would think that the control center would give you some info; in the alternative, there are some commands that will give you some of the info you might need if you are at all familiar with the CLI.

There are not very many icons in a default Ubuntu installation. What icons did you have that you want?

How about simply creating the icons that you want?

Are you using the GNOME desktop environment, which comes with Ubuntu, the KDE desktop environment, which comes with Kubuntu, or the XFCE environment, which comes with Xubuntu?

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop will install or reinstall the desktop environment from a command line. Change kubuntu to ubuntu or xubuntu to get the ubuntu-desktop or the xubuntu-desktop.

Let's get a baseline, then we can get you what you really want from there. Start by telling me which of these systems you have and we can proceed from there.
