In a situation like that, yes.

However, we're talking more for (whatever, general) gmail here --

I wasn't Wink I didn't make it clear enough from the beginning so I think I confused everyone. ssmtp doesn't just have to be used with gmail..... it can of course be used with others as well.

I would say that if you have a personal system, you use it to administer various tasks and you want to create an easy mechanism for controlling the way that you send messages, then sSMTP is a good option. You can use it for all the mail that you send or you can simply use it for those administrative tasks.

Sendmail is the default and the classic SMTP server, but it is extremely complicated. Postfix started out as a somewhat simpler SMTP server, but it, too, has grown in size and scope, though still arguably easier than Sendmail. Exim and QMail are two additional alternatives. You can read about them at the YoLinux Portal site.

Information on QMail can be found on their site.

Additional information and links about various kinds of mail servers can be found at the emailman site.

For ease of use for sending mail from your local system....

Easiest would be ssmtp
Next would be postfix
Next qmail and exim
Last Sendmail

ssmtp is the easiest to use/setup, but ALSO has the fewest options.... with more options comes more layers of complexity in setup/administration/security ..... so , for me, needing something VERY simple, ssmtp is the PERFECT fit. I can setup ssmtp on systems that I remotely administer, and it can send me automatic updates (IE: the ip address changed / hard drive is almost full / whatever cron job i have setup to monitor.... makes reporting back to me VERY easy to accomplish Wink )

For anyone wanting to run their own mailserver, ssmtp is a GREAT place to start/get your feet wet.

I agree with that assessment.
