I had a good Father's Day, but the day before Father's Day, Saturday, was when I really had a good time. I took my eight year old son to Lake Sunapee at Newbury Harbor in Newbury, NH, one of our favorite spots for water activities because it is only about forty minutes away; it is relatively small, close to several things, the water is warmer than the ocean, and there is plenty to do. My son brought his goggles and snorkel, and he was one of the few to brave the water. I thought it was too chilly, but he thought otherwise!

Not long thereafter, however, he spotted some people fishing from the dock and went over to see what they were doing. A boy there caught a Rock Bass that was about eight inches in length, so it seemed worth doing some fishing. A school of Rock Bass were hanging out right near the dock, frequently going underneath the dock and venturing just a short way from the dock.

We took a break, went across the street to Bubba's and had lunch. My son had a jumbo shrimp appetizer - five or six very good sized shrimp, and he loved it. Then we went back across the street to the dock. By this time, there was a family with a very young girl, two or three, a teenaged girl, and a dad named Tim who were fishing. All of them, even the tiny girl named Ana, caught Rock Bass. Tim was extremely kind to my son and GAVE him a five foot fishing rod to keep with an open faced reel, and he also gave him a container of night crawlers. My son was ecstatic, and he really stuck with it, and caught at least seven fish, mostly Rock Bass, but he caught one larger Catfish that was perhaps about ten inches long that was definitely fatter than any of the Rock Bass - though one Rock Bass had at least a little meat on it.

My son was so excited that he wanted to bring all of the Rock Bass home to try to cook and eat them. We did; not much meat, but my son had fun, and seeing him enjoying it so much brought me a lot of joy. These were some memories that will not be quickly forgotten.
