So this apparently has everyone on Arch linux forums stumped

Yeah. Ubuntu DOES have a very good implementation of networkmanager, as does Mandriva, but everyone elses networkmanager seems to be garbage. WICD just plain works in just about every distro. I've had no problems getting sidux, Debian Squeeze (with the backports SID kernel if running the newer wifilink cards), Debian SID, Kubuntu, Mandriva or Calculate (Gentoo) working on laptops. Only Arch seems to like to give me constant hassles.

I'm just guessing here: kernel. Compiled with weird options?

I assume. I use vanilla distro kernels and don't recompile anything myself (well, other than Gentoo by design but even then I don't change any of the default options for the kernel).
