Linux-based database serving windows clients

PHP is very easy to find examples for just by googling around and the php project website has good documentation. If you do decide to go LAMP its easy to get everything installed. Some distros like opensuse even have a selection for LAMP in their package manager that will automatically install apache, php, mysql, and most all the other goodies you'd ever need.

Any box that you considering making available on the internet I would recommend running denyhosts.
