yeah, forking to tools like awk and sed to do basic string operations is a bit expensive. On the plus side, the applications themselves are pretty efficient and written in C/assembler, so if the amount of work it is doing is large the payoff is pretty good.

PS: get rid of that frickin annoying popup ad at the bottom... that really really makes your site look bad. Unless of course your all about the ad revenue and not about the content...
