NEW • Distribution Release: SimplyMEPIS 8.0.15
MEPIS Linux Warren Woodford has announced the release of SimplyMEPIS 8.0.15, a new update of the beginner-friendly distribution based on Debian's stable branch: "MEPIS LLC has released SimplyMEPIS 8.0.15, an update to the community edition of MEPIS 8.0. SimplyMEPIS 8.0 uses a Debian stable foundation enhanced with a long-term support kernel, key package updates, and the MEPIS Assistant applications to create an up-to-date, ready-to-use system providing a KDE 3.5 desktop. This release includes recent Debian security updates as well as MEPIS updates which include Linux kernel 2.6.27.43, OpenOffice.org 3.1.1, Firefox 3.5.6, and BIND 9.6.1-P2. Also available are Skype 2.1.0.47 and Mono 2.4.2.3. The MEPIS installer was updated to fix a recently discovered bug that sometimes interfered with installing MEPIS as the only operating system on a hard drive." As I noted over at Newbies Linux where this information was also posted, I think that SimplyMEPIS has a great strategy going. When Version 7.0 was released, then Warren Woodford had to take a consulting job to keep revenue coming in, there was quite a lull of visible activity in the MEPIS community. The MEPIS Lovers community stepped up, added their own repositories and made current versions of many applications available, but in the time between versions 7.0 and 8.0 MEPIS lost a great deal of visibility.

Since that time, there has been even more activity in the community. Over the past fifteen months, not only has there been regular updates and new versions of SimplyMEPIS: 8.0, 8.0.6, 8.0.10, 8.0.12, and now 8.0.15, there has also been antiX M8.0, M8.2, and M8.5 is in testing. The community has produced a number of other respins in addition to antiX - the Danum KDE 4 versions, recently named Canteras, the Marcos' XFCE and LXDE respins, and a number of others, both public and private.

Warren Woodford had originally planned to release a Version 9.0 around this time, based on Debian Squeeze, but when the Squeeze project changed their plans and schedule, Warren changed his plans as well. Instead of a Version 9.0, based on Debian Squeeze, he began developing a Version 8.5, based on Debian Lenny, introducing KDE 4 into that mix, which he obtains from the versions under development. He began with KDE 4.3.2 and is now using KDE 4.3.4 in SimplyMEPIS 8.5 Beta 4, which has worked wonderfully on my Lenovo and Gateway laptop systems.

Meanwhile, the 8.0.15 legacy version is simply an update of 8.0, moderately updating packages from the most recent 8.0.12 release. Very good idea, in my opinion, since Version 8.5 Beta 4, though looking very good, does not have all driver and application issues completely solved to everyone's satisfaction, and the release documentation has not been completed either, so it will still be at least a month or two out - at least - before 8.5 can be released with the usual quality and support associated with MEPIS. Because of this, releasing 8.0.15, which does fall completely under the 8.0 umbrella - simply the latest updates contained in a new ISO image for new users - is a good idea.

Any of these releases is really good and well worth using. The community needs help testing the Beta releases, so if you are interested, consider helping both the antiX and SimplyMEPIS development, testing, and documentation efforts.

Warren Woodford has announced the release of SimplyMEPIS 8.5, a beginner-friendly desktop Linux distribution with KDE 4, based on Debian GNU/Linux: "For SimplyMEPIS 8.5 we started with the stable Debian 'Lenny' core and then selectively introduced updated packages that make SimplyMEPIS 8.5 a more timely operating system. Specifically, 8.5 uses a 2.6.32 kernel for up-to-date hardware support. It has the new KDE 4.3.4 desktop, yet retains much of the familiar MEPIS/KDE look and feel, so users can slowly become familiar with the new features in KDE 4.3. The new MEPIS Welcome Center guides users through their first steps with MEPIS including finding documentation, connecting with the community, and optionally installing additional applications and language packs."
