Using a "generic" kernel post install??

While setting up for an upgrade on Slackware, I actually read the "changes/hints" from the last version of Slackware. Here is a quote:

rather than the huge kernels; the huge kernels are primarily intended as
"installer" and "emergency" kernels in case you forget to make an initrd.
For most systems, you should use the generic SMP kernel if it will run,
even if your system is not SMP-capable.

Shocked Confused Confused
There are instructions for some mkinitrd stuff, but is this unique to Slackware?? I just have never seen installation instructions that suggested doing a different kernel after an install. Is (or could it be) something important??
