Using Grep I ripped through the sane list of scanners that show complete support, as I wanted a list to take with me to flea markets, garage sales, etc, that would fit in my pocket. This list is up to date as of 1-22-2006. I added notes to several of them as to the DPI and approx retail of the scanner so i had some idea as to the value of the scanner (just a rough estimate). Many scanners that are listed are older scanners that are in the 600dpi and less range. Those were not the ones i wanted to buy Wink

Ebay has proven to be a good source for compatible scanners for me, but you of course always run the risk of getting one that doesn't work (IE: broken). A good source for general scanner information is here :

http://www.epinions.com/Scanners

and the complete list of scanners from the sane project is here:

http://www.sane-project.org/sane-supported-devices.html

List of compatible scanners for Linux.

A long time has passed since crouse posted this thread, so be sure to check the SANE website for your scanner.

Just to raise peoples knowledge, HP supports Linux with a decent driver for most models that use hpaio.

My PSC1610 seems to work 100% in PCLinuxOS 2024: I have printed, scanned and copied using it under Linux, no problems.

Gotta love it.

I installed Ubuntu 9.10, and when I powered on the 1610 All-in-One for the first time that Ubuntu sees it, within 10 seconds it was ready to use - I had not installed anything for that All-in-One before powering it up! I immediately launched XSane, previewed and off I went. I remember the old days when.... ugh.

If you want really good deals on scanners, forget eBay. I get my stuff at the thrift shop. No postage and handling to worry about. I bought a Brother Laser printer HL-2070N for $5 that works great. I've seen scanners for as low as $1 in some thrift stores, printers for around $4. The HP monitor I'm using right now cost me just $5.

The best deals are in thrift stores that aren't part of a chain ( a chain as in Goodwill or Salvation Army) because chain stores tend to be a little higher. Although, at some Goodwills, you can find good deals on stuff like scanners. Thrift stores run by churches seem to have really good deals.

Since they're always getting in new stuff, it pays to go in every few days. Before you buy anything electronic, plug it in and make sure it works. Some stores test things to make sure they work, some don't or aren't able to. A Scanner is kind of hard to try out in a store, but you can at least plug it in to make sure it works. Even if you buy it and discover it doesn't...you didn't spend much on it. Think of it as a lottery ticket. And at least you can keep the cords and cables. More often than not though, the stuff works.

Goodwill takes American Express, so it isn't just for poor people. Laughing
