Quirky Quirky is a new Linux distribution created by Barry Kauler, the founder of Puppy Linux, "as an avenue to explore new ideas." The project's inaugural stable release was announced earlier today: "This first release is quite straight, not very 'quirky'. Some of the interesting ideas that I want to try are still to come. The focus for now is to test a lot of the new stuff in Woof, such as Rerwin's analog and 3G modem detection/setup scripts. Here is a summary of features specific to Quirky 1.0: GRUB Legacy and Grub4dos; Flsynclient - synclient GUI configuration of touchpad; Openbox, Fbpanel, JWM window managers; numerous updated applications (AbiWord, Pmusic); 2.6.33.2 kernel, updated firmware, bug-fix patches; new tray applets - Traytemp, Powerapplet, Freememapplet, Retrovol...." Quirky Barry Kauler has announced the release of Quirky 1.1, a bug-fix update to the recently released version 1.0: "I am pleased to announce the released of Quirky 1.1. Briefly, the main focus was to fix bugs in 1.0, but I also upgraded many applications. Most importantly, SeaMonkey has migrated from the 1.x series, after we solved some bugs with the 2.x series. JWM is now the default window manager and tray, as it is noticeably faster (and looks nicer) than Openbox/Fbpanel. Two show-stoppers were Ayttm and You2pup which did not work, both fixed. Release notes: The 'xfontsel' utility was missing although had a menu entry; upgrading (and rollbacks) of the X.Org drivers; Partview utility (to view free space in partitions) fixed for more than 11 partitions; Ayttm chat client did not work, upgraded and fixed...." Quirky Barry Kauler has announced the release of Quirky 1.2, a fast, minimalist desktop Linux distribution with many characteristics of Puppy Linux, but built with a different toolkit: "Quirky 1.2. This continues bug fixing of 1.0/1.1, but also many packages are upgraded and new packages and ideas incorporated. In particular, a wider range of video/audio formats are supported, which is the main reason the live CD image file is a little bigger. There is now a very small HTML viewer for displaying local help files - this has basic CSS support. Release notes: many utilities and small applications upgraded; multimedia packages upgraded; many bug fixes; simple local-help HTML viewer with libgtkhtml. This release is supposed to play just about any audio/video file, DVD, embedded or streaming media, but not yet WebM/VP8 - I am targeting that for Quirky 1.3." This is pretty impressive. I am here with Midori Browser using sliTaz. X window has good resolution, and it was on the net on boot without any fiddling. Quite a bit more than I expected for 30 MB. have to get into the guts a bit

Syllable Desktop is a graphical system that runs on standard Personal Computers and is easy to operate. If you just want to try it out, the best way to do that is to use the Live CD. This is a good way to experience how Syllable runs on your computer and to check if your hardware is supported. It is also a good way to use Syllable once in a while and to take it with you to other computers. It requires that you restart your computer and make it start from the CD instead of the operating system that you have installed on your computer.

If you have trouble doing that, or if your hardware is not supported well enough by Syllable, you can try running the emulator image in an emulator. There are several emulators available that will work. You can also use this method if you want to use Syllable more often and want to keep your data on it, but you are not ready yet to install it on a partition of your hard disk. Be aware that emulators are much slower than the real thing, and they can have odd behaviours, so this is not a good way to judge Syllable's real performance. On the other hand, you can often expect Syllable to run better than many mainstream systems, because they are often too big and slow to run well on emulators. In general, Syllable works best with the VMware and QEmu emulators.

If you want to go all the way and experience Syllable fully, you can buy the Premium CD or download the Basic CD to install it on a disk partition of its own. The Premium CD combines all available software and documentation and is one of the ways you can support the Syllable project. Although installing is not very difficult, it is more complicated than running the Live CD or the emulator image. You need to have a basic understanding of the organisation of your disk in partitions. You will be rewarded with the fastest Syllable system possible. An installation on disk is much faster than running the Live CD and requires less memory.

Installing Syllable is easier than installing most other systems, and upgrading Syllable to a newer version without loosing your data and settings is definitely much easier.

There are five ways to try Syllable: Premium CD, Live CD, Basic CD, Emulate, Upgrade

MINIX Ben Gras has announced the release of MINIX 3.1.7, a new version of the UNIX-like computer operating system based on a microkernel architecture: "MINIX 3.1.7 is released. Major features: userspace scheduling and a scheduling server; proper support for multiple Ethernet cards of the same type; bug fixes (such as workaround to run on recent KVM); debug features ('verbose' boot monitor variable, access to debug registers DR0-DR7 in kernel); boot monitor allows loading images larger than 16 MB; root partition size increased to 64 MB (and setup script can now more or less safely deal with root partitions with non-default sizes); buildsystem support for building MINIX with GCC; source tree reorganization and clean-up; new ports - Git, GCC updated to version 4.4.3; secondary FS cache layer in VM that uses all available memory, reducing I/O wait time a lot."
