Welcome to this year's 14th issue of DistroWatch Weekly! A variety of topics, ranging from Sony's controversial decision to remove Linux support from PlayStation to Ubuntu's announcement about "Maverick Meerkat", are discussed in this week's issue of your favourite distro-related magazine. The publication starts with a first-look review of Asturix 2.0 "Business" edition, a relatively new, Spanish distribution based on Ubuntu, before it continues with the usual round-up of news and links to interesting articles of the past week, including a story about the upcoming beta release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, an update about Puppy Linux 5 series, and a link to an overview of Unity Linux, a minimalist Mandriva-based operating system. Then we have the regular Questions and Answers section which looks at a simple way of converting an RPM package into a DEB for easy installation on any Debian-based system. Finally, the Site News section presents the latest DistroWatch donation which goes to Libre Graphics Meeting, before it introduces Puredyne, an Ubuntu-based distribution designed for creative artists. Happy reading!

Welcome to this year's 16th issue of DistroWatch Weekly! Operating systems come in many different shapes and sizes - some are enormous and created by huge multinational software companies, others are tiny and represent the result of a few curious individuals. HelenOS belongs to the latter camp. Although it was started as a research project and is presently still just a tool to learn about system internals, the project has ambition to become a usable, general-purpose operating system. Read on for our interview with founder Jakub Jermar and a first-look review of the latest version. In the news section, Fedora continues its march towards its next stable release, Debian developers elect a new project leader and MOPSLinux faces uncertain future following a sponsor's departure. Also not to be missed: a link to an excellent article on migrating to GRUB 2, and our questions and answers feature which explains the intricacies of the "nice" and "renice" commands. Happy reading!

Welcome to this year's 17th issue of DistroWatch Weekly! It's the Ubuntu release week, but before we get a chance to swarm the download mirrors with our insatiable desire for new releases, there is still time to cover some of the lesser-known distributions. This week we'll take a look at Scientific Linux, a surprisingly popular Linux option - and not just for sever rooms of high-tech research rooms and leading laboratories. In the news section, Red Hat announces the first public beta of a Xen-less Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, Fedora continues its strong march towards version 13 with a plethora of (mostly invisible) features, Edubuntu prepares for a launch of a much improved Ubuntu flavour for schools, and MEPIS releases a set of USB images with extra applications and language support. Also in this issue, a look at the current state of affairs at Xandros and an explanation about motives behind 6-month release cycles which many popular distributions adopted in recent years. All this and more in this week's issue of DistroWatch Weekly - happy reading!

Welcome to this year's 19th issue of DistroWatch Weekly! Mandriva Linux, a distribution that was one of the first to understand the concept of user-friendliness on the desktop, is apparently for sale and in negotiations with two potential buyers. That's according to some unconfirmed reports that appeared on the Internet over the weekend. But the company itself remains mute on the issue, while the development of the upcoming version 2024.1 continues unabated. In other news, Red Hat explains the genealogy of its enterprise kernels, Debian and Slackware update KDE to version 4.4.3 in their respective development branches, Sabayon announces availability of daily, bleeding-edge DVD builds, and Astaro apologises for last week's updates that went terribly wrong. Also in this issue, The Economist magazine explains the reasons for setting up a Launchpad account, while The Times urges users to abandon Windows and to switch to Ubuntu. Finally, for the fans of lighter distributions we have a first-look review of CDlinux, Canonical's announcement about a new "Unity" desktop for netbooks, news about a special edition of Unity Linux with Enlightenment, and an introduction to an inaugural release of Quirky, a new mini-distribution from the developers of Puppy Linux. There is something for everyone - happy reading!

PostPosted: Thu May 13, 2024 3:03 pm    Post subject: Mandriva needs a company that delivers a profitable strategy Reply with quote

Sounds like more of the same to me. From my observations, Mandrake and Mandriva have always been, from a technical standpoint, among the top five distributions available at most any time during the past twelve or more years. During that same time, however, at least three companies I can think of: first and foremost, Red Hat, which has done an outstanding job of creating a viable business strategy, SUSE, which attracted Novell and was able to gain a foothold, not only in Europe, but in some parts of America, plus forge an agreement with Microsoft, which mutually benefitted both companies, and finally Canonical, which took a great distribution, Debian, and from it, created a regular distribution schedule and set out to create a desktop system that did not cater only to computer enthusiasts, but to a wide range of other people as well.

Mandriva sought innovation, too. It was among the first to attempt consumer distribution of its software, it was either first or very early to distribute complete systems on USB keys, and it has always been a leader in localization so that its products can be used in many locations. For whatever reason, Mandriva has had very limited success leveraging these accomplishments in the marketplace. I'd have to suggest, based on solid products lacking a strategy that can be profitably sold, that can only fall in one place, and that is management. The management chose to divest itself of its founder, Gael Duval, probably because Duval was at odds with the management strategy and wanted to go in different directions. Well, Duval wasn't and isn't a marketing whiz either, but he was and is a development expert.

A good move for Mandriva would be to first come up with a salient strategy then come up with a management team and solid investment capital to pull off the strategy. Perhaps an outside company with a clear view and a track record of delivering successful results would be a big help.

Too bad that Google based their ChromeOS platform on Ubuntu rather than on Mandriva. That sure could have given the project a visual boost! Let's hope that whatever happens results in new vigor for the future of a really solid system that could use a profitable and well organized home.

Welcome to this year's 24th issue of DistroWatch Weekly! The question of binary firmware is a contentious issue in many Linux circles. Although many freedom-loving users accept the position of the Free Software Foundation (FSF) which advocates removing any drivers that require proprietary firmware from the Linux kernel, there are those who challenge this view as naive and even hypocritical. Our feature story, an opinion of an expert with years of experience in the electronics industry, offers an alternative position to that of FSF. In the news section, Fedora project reveals roadmap and early feature list for version 14, Eric Hameleers presents the recently released Slackware Linux 13.1, the developers of Peppermint OS talk about their vision of Linux-based cloud computing, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory ports parts of the Solaris ZFS file system to Linux. Also in this issue, a brief tutorial on creating an encrypted file system for storing sensitive data. Finally, for those readers who enjoy checking the package versions in our distribution tables, we'd like to hear your suggestions for the annual package database update. Happy reading!
