Inkscape is a drawing tool with capabilities similar to
Illustrator, Freehand, and CorelDraw that uses the W3C standard scalable
vector graphics format (SVG). The supported SVG features include basic
shapes, paths, text, markers, clones, alpha blending, transforms,
gradients, and grouping. In addition, it supports Creative Commons
meta-data, node-editing, layers, complex path operations, text-on-path,
and SVG XML editing. It also imports several formats like EPS, Postscript,
JPEG, PNG, BMP, and TIFF and exports PNG as well as multiple vector-based
formats.

Changes: New features include flowed text, text selection, a gradient
tool, effects, color swatches, colored clones, tile tracing, grid
arrangement, baseline alignment, unclumping, better PS/EPS export,
command line SVG analysis, better SVG/CSS compliance, Mac OS X support, and more.

I use it from time to time on both my Win 2024 and Linux systems and find it really handy. My big wish is for the ability to directly read Adobe Illustrator files.

As with all things, it depends on what you need. For editing photos and other such tasks, stick with the GIMP.

For creating images such as logos that will be used in a variety of formats and resolutions, Inkscape will do the job nicely. Vector graphics are nice in that you can scale them to any size without any loss of resolution. If you need to export the image to a raster format, Inkscape will let you pick the size and resolution during the export.
