Nine Inch Nails album "The Slip" released under Creative Commons license
Uwe Hermann wrote:
You might have already heard of it — the new Nine Inch Nails album "The Slip" has been released by them under the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 3.0 US license. Yep, that's right, it's totally legal to download it from the web — and use it for any non-commercial purposes!

It's a bit annoying that they want your email address, though. Nothing that bugmenot.com (or similar) cannot fix, but still. Luckily, the files are now also available from archive.org! This, and the fact that the music is CC-licensed allowed me to "play" one of the songs in my Creative Commons music podcast (RSS), and more will likely follow.

I am currently downloading/seeding my format in flac, via bittorrent legally...

Use the bugmenot.com link, so you know you will not have any additional spam than you already have. Not that companies would do such a thing as sell your email to spammers...

Yes, I know this is not a audio or video application, but it is audio, and being free is about as good as it gets. Just like Linux.

I've only heard one track off it. They are playing it locally. Not impressed...

Ditto. I guess I can see where some people would find their "work" as "music," but personally, I am questioning whether to even call that stuff "music" or not...

I don't want to start a flame war over music tastes, though, so I've probably already overstepped my boundaries. And I don't intend to offend anyone by saying that ^^^ . Wink

Like it or not.... It IS cool that they used Creative Commons license.
That does make it very noteworthy. Has any other bigger artist did the same before ?

Oh yeah, it is still VERY cool that they used that license! I don't mean to be getting on that at ALL.

Radiohead did the same thing, but I'm not sure about the license. I also never downloaded it to check out if it was any good. Haven't gotten around to listening to the NiN yet.

It's certainly not everyone tastes, but its definitely good music...

That said, I was somewhat disappointed compared to Trent's previous work. I'm not sure if releasing it for free has made him lose a bit of his obsessive compulsiveness or not.

Every one album of his tends to have a different style though. (I'm not sure if its quite right to call it an album, its more of an EP)

Wiki - Nine Inch Nails wrote:
Nine Inch Nails (abbreviated as NIN) is an American industrial rock act, founded in 1988 by Trent Reznor in Cleveland, Ohio. As its main producer, singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, Reznor is the only official member of Nine Inch Nails and remains solely responsible for its direction.

Trent Reznor, I think is pretty talented for being the ONLY member of the band.
